What does it mean to be a neurodiversity-affirming speech-language pathologist?
Being a ND-A SLP means that we recognize and respect the neurological differences among individuals. We understand that neurodivergent individuals (autistic, ADHD, etc.) have unique strengths, abilities, and perspectives that should be respected in an inclusive and supportive environment. We encourage and accept all forms of communication and adapt our therapy to meet specific needs. We always presume competence while empowering and supporting neurodivergent individuals’ communication, strengths, and special interests.

Why is sensory integration important for my child's learning?
Children need movement to thrive! Sensory integration plays a key role in regulating a child’s body and mind, helping them feel engaged and ready to learn. By addressing each child’s unique sensory needs, we support them in reaching an optimal state for learning, allowing new information to be processed more effectively and efficiently.

What is gestalt language processing?
There are two ways that children process language: analytic (typical) and gestalt. Analytic processors learn language word by word, building to phrases and sentences (e.g., "mom", then "mom go", then "mom go up"). Gestalt processors learn language in "chunks" or scripts. Gestalt language processors (GLPs) do not use single words as single units of meaning until later in language development. In other words, GLPs learn language in chunks/phrases first then need help learning to break apart the chunks into single words. These students use scripting (often of whole phrases/songs/movie lines) to acquire language and communicate. Most autistic individuals are gestalt language processors, but neurotypical children can process language this way as well. Children who script with rich intonation (in a singing or upbeat manner) are typically gestalt language processors.
-
What is natural language acquisition (NLA)
Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) is a framework that details the stages of gestalt language development to help a child unbundle their chunks/gestalts to achieve self-generated speech. It helps identify and support gestalt language processors through a natural child led approach.

It looks like my child is just playing. Are they learning anything?
Yes! Children learn through play! Play improves cognitive, physical, social development of a child. We strive to make our sessions fun and engaging to activate their brains to learn new information. The complexity of a child’s language skills reflects in their play abilities. Therefore taking a child led play based approach helps to build a strong foundation for increasing language skills.

Can family members join/observe therapy sessions?
